Finally, if you need to install Mountain Lion over Leopard —assuming you have the license to do so—a bootable install drive makes it easier to do so. I show you how, below. In addition, you can easily update a USB stick or external hard drive each time an update to Mac OS X is released, as explained below; with a DVD, you have to toss the disc in the trash and start over, which is both a hassle and bad for the environment.
Note: As explained in our main Mountain Lion-installation article , if you leave the Mountain Lion installer in its default location in the Applications folder when you install OS X So if you plan to use that installer on other Macs, or—in this case—to create a bootable drive, be sure to copy the installer to another drive, or at least move it out of the Applications folder, before you install.
Before you make a bootable install drive, you should make sure you have the latest version of the Mountain Lion installer. It turns out that when you download the Mountain Lion installer from the Mac App Store, that copy of the installer installs whatever version of OS X was available at the time of download.

Jul 26, AM. Hi - if you open the App Store, does it show you for iPhoto and iWorks programs that they are installed? I believe, when I have bought iPhoto there was V10 installed. Later on, V11 appeared but not for free, needs to be purchased and I bought it thru App Store pretty sure.

I saw the updates available in Lion, but I decided to upgrade to Mountain Lion first, and after installing Mountain Lion, those updates are not available. They were purchased outside of the Mac App Store. My iWork 09 was bought on dvd before App Store. You have to go to the iWork support site and DL the iWork 4. If this is the case, does this mean different family members must sign in to the same account or use the same account just to update the OS? In my case, purchased OS X Lion with my Apple ID, one of my family signed to my account once in order to download Lion, but they can update their system using the the classic Software Update utility afterwards. Now it seems they'll need to sign into my account every time for any update, or we'll have to create a new Apple ID just for this purpose.
OS updates are in a different group in the Mac App Store, and neither checking for them nor downloading them requires you to be logged in to any account at all, so you should not have any problems.
